sounds like you fit the typical profile around here. Hope you got a good end of year deal too.
In cold Texas weather (50-60s), I start with the choke partially out for 30 seconds, and run for 2 to 3 minutes before taking off. That seems to do it.
The other 'big trick' if you don't have a 2nd person to help you hold the bike or bend on their knees view the oil window, is get a hand mirror to
view the oil window while you sit on the bike.
